The city of Philadelphia's
dance music culture has a long history. It's roots
first taking shape in small covert venues with
old steel doors guarding their entranceways. Packed
dance floors were controlled by visionary DJ's
who took each dancer, along with entire city,
to the new frontiers. They introduced new sounds
and musical concepts. These individuals were and
have been the very catalysts for defining an entire
culture. These special musical gatherings of the
past are history and these musical journeymen
who set the pace then and now are legend.
Over the course of last decade the Philadelphia
Dance Music scene has seen renaissance of style,
energy, creativity and direction. Ask any DJ in
Philadelphia who is the one individual largely
responsible for this change and you are almost
assured the same response across the board: Rob
Lee. It all began in the early 90's when Rob first
started DJ'ing. Spinning campus parties at his
college, University of Pennsylvania, his name
began to spread like wildfire, as his parties
became known throughout the school as the hottest
places to go on a campus. With this word of mouth
publicity, Rob's parties soon outgrew the campus
and spilled into venues outside of the college
walls. Before long, Rob was approached by promoters
who frequented his events about recreating his
magic in some of the city's major venues. Jumping
at the opportunity Rob Lee began touring early
on with demand for his energetic sets at a high.
Rob made appearances at the Bank, Metropolis,
Voodoo, WunderBar, Queen and Vagabond.
This high profile exposure in the city landed
him a residency at Revival; Philadelphia's most
progressive and underground club at the time.
Here at Revival, is where Rob Lee defined himself
and set the pace for entire city. Creating a musical
standard and sound that would become the very
basis for the musical style that would define
the Philadelphia's nightlife. The Rob Lee sound
covered all parts of the city as he held residencies
at all of the hottest spots around like the Casbah
and the ultra naughty Black Banana. Rob then went
on to become the resident of the Brass Door, which
has gone down in history as one of hottest after-hours
spots the city, has known. Some time later there
was a talk of ground breaking new club to be opened
in the city and its owners wanted the special
sound of Rob Lee to be its voice. Agreeing to
reside over Saturday nights at the Evolution,
Rob once again brought his flock, the city of
Philadelphia, to their new pastures where he's
fed them as their resident for over five years.
Many traveling promoters passed through the city
to hear the sets of the 'Legendary' Rob Lee ,as
the locals named him. |
